Nelda June Millikan Cordell

82, of Indianapolis, passed away August 26, 2010 after a sudden illness. She was born October 23, 1927, the oldest child of the late Guy and Denzle Millikan. June loved her childhood on the family farm, raising chickens and her pet lamb, Bucky. After graduating from Westfield High School in 1946, June ventured away from the farm, finding employment at L. S. Ayres in downtown Indianapolis. It was there that she met her future husband, Eugene Richard Cordell. Gene proposed to her in Brown County and gave her an engagement ring at the Indiana War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis, but she made him wait until she turned 21 to marry. June and Gene were married February 27, 1949, sharing 61 � years of marriage. Along with her devoted husband, June leaves behind their four children; Michael Cordell, Cynthia (Byron) Eason, Donna Lawrence, and Mark Cordell; 10 grandchildren, Timothy (Donna) Smith, Tawnya (Dean) Curran, Tricia (David) Scheibelhut, Christopher (Sherry) Cordell, Randy (Angela) Bowman, Brent Eason, Emily Cordell, April (Jeff) Rector, Sharon Lawrence and Karen Lawrence; 15 great-grandchildren, Courtney Curran, Zachary Curran, Travis Bowman, Sarah Scheibelhut, William Scheibelhut, Dusty Lawrence, Kyle Crouch, Casey Vaughn, Jacob Vaughn, Mackenzie Kempner, Damon Rector, Abigail Rector, Aaron Peoples, Alex Peoples and Alyssa Smith; her loving sisters, Juliann Baldwin, Sandra (Bill) Dennis, Carol (Bob) Edwards, Sharon (Vern) Thompson, and her loving brother, Kent (Barbara) Millikan. June led a very active life. She operated a successful daycare in her home, providing care for over 200 children. She was also a Den Mother for Boy Scout Packs #283 and #122 for several years. June worked for RCA and Bookwalters Publishing and eventually returned to the retail industry, working for L. S. Ayres, J. C. Penney, Kohl�s, Lazarus and Stride Rite, where she fit children�s shoes until her retirement in 1994. After retirement, June became involved in the Westfield Geneological Society, The Rose Society, and Weight Watchers, where she had become a lifetime member. June was a 53 year member of Calvary Tabernacle and made friends everywhere she went. Visitation will be Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St. with funeral services Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Tabernacle, 902 Fletcher Ave., with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
