Marjorie Anne Hill

Marjorie Anne Hill, 91, died on July 1, 2017 at Indiana University Health Hospice House. Marjorie was born March 10, 1926 in Winchester, IN. Her parents, Thomas Newton Hill and Elma Alexander Hill were missionaries to India, where Marjorie grew up and where she spent the majority of her life serving others. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marilynne Hill and her brother, Thomas Newton Hill, Jr. Marjorie attended Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India. She graduated from Richmond High School, and attended Earlham College in Richmond. She graduated from Phillips College in Enid, OK, and received her Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Minnesota. She did further study at Johns Hopkins University. Marjorie spent 40 years as a medical social worker in India from 1951 to 1991 with the Disciples of Christ Church. She served at Jackman Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Bilaspur. She set up the Social Service Department at the Christian Medical College Hospital in Ludhiana. She taught in a Catholic School of Nursing in Kunkuri. She taught nurses in Indore and worked with the Voluntary Health Association of India as director of the Madhya Pradesh branch. Marjorie retired to Indianapolis, where she was a longtime member of the Downey Avenue Christian Church. She lived in Robin Run Retirement Center for 25 years and was active in the singing group and neighborhood activities. She was a church representative for Bread for the World. The last year of her life was spent in Bloomington, near her sister Helen Sturbaum. She became a member of First Christian Church. She and Helen enjoyed many afternoons rekindling their friendship after spending much of their adult lives on opposite sides of the world. Marjorie is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Karl Sturbaum and Judy Rice and Chris and Barb Sturbaum of Bloomington; Arthur Sturbaum and Nancy Ratner of Cincinnati; Anne Sturbaum of Wooster, OH; Ben Sturbaum and Peggy Gaither of Owensburg, IN; and Nicholas and Timothy Hill of New York. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. July 21, 2017, at Robin Run Village in Indianapolis.
