Marianna Frakes Preston

Marianna Frakes Preston, 93, of Indianapolis, died peacefully surrounded by her family November 6, 2015. Marianna Lou Frakes was born in 1922 in Indianapolis to the late Ivan Clark and Leathel Rosenbarger Frakes. She graduated from Warren Central High School in 1940, attended Indiana University and was married for 66 years to her high school sweetheart, Francis E. Preston, who predeceases her. Marianna and Francis raised five wonderful children, Donna Taylor, Peggy (Stacy) Thompson, Rosy (Jay) Brownell, Charles (Ann) Preston and Cindy (John) Dinwiddie. They were blessed with 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Ivan, Jr., James and Donald; son-in-law, David Taylor; and an infant son, Danny. She is survived by her siblings, Barbara Jo Frakes Wheeler, Alice Frakes McKenna, Thomas Frakes and Janet Frakes Strenth. Holiday celebrations in the Preston’s Brendonridge home were brought to life by Marianna’s wonderful hospitality and her amazing ability to cook for her ever expanding family. The Preston household was also home to a wonderful array of international students over the years. Marianna was very engaged in the American Field Service and was proud to have been a founder of the International Center of Indianapolis. She was an active member of the Sunnyside Guild and was chairman of their Town Hall Series. In 1983, Francis Preston was honored to be the Potentate of the Murat Shrine and Marianna was by his side as he undertook that post. She was a lifelong Republican and volunteered in Mayor Lugar’s office for many years. She was a longtime member of Lawrence United Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and/or Easter Seals Crossroads, 4740 Kingsway Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46205. Visitation will be Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:30 p.m. at Castleton United Methodist Church, 7101 N. Shadeland Ave. Interment will be private. Final care and arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel.
