Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Hoopingarner

Elizabeth “Betty” A. Hoopingarner, 87, of Indianapolis, Indiana peacefully transitioned from this world to be home with the Lord in Heaven with her family at her side on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 7:11 p.m. Elizabeth was also affectionately known as Betty or Betty Ann, by her family, and friends. She was born July 30, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island to Alice Pomfret and Frank Ianotti. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Betty Ann met the love of her life, young Indiana Hoosier Jimmy Wayne Hoopingarner, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The two were joined in holy matrimony April 7, 1959 in Henderson, North Carolina. Betty made it to heaven just in time to be with Jim for their 66th anniversary-having never missed being apart for even one anniversary in 66 years. Betty was never one to be able to sit still, she always worked hard. She had many jobs, including working in her mother’s restaurant, serving coffee at the Providence Airport, and working in a jewelry store. She ran her own successful business for over thirty years. Betty worked hard cleaning and caring for her clients’ homes as if they were her own. She was a dedicated Avon Lady, earning many accolades during her years in the President’s Club and earning several Miss Albees. She also loved using and selling her Tupperware-anyone that knew her is probably still using at least some Tupperware sold or given by Betty. Betty’s husband, Jim, served as the Lead Pastor at East Tenth Street Baptist Church for 34 years until his retirement in 2012. During his tenure at East Tenth Street Baptist Church Betty served faithfully in any and all roles as needed. For a time, she was the secretary, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and event coordinator, you name it and Betty cheerfully fulfilled the role. Betty Ann loved her husband Jimmy Wayne dearly. Together they were blessed with 65 years of marriage, five children, James Hoopingarner, Jr. (Zelda), Donald Hoopingarner, Debbie Hoopingarner Golden, Lisa Hoopingarner Apostolakis (John Jr.) and Amber Golden Tilley (Aaron); eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, loved ones, friends, and many brothers and sisters in Christ. Betty was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, James “Jim” Hoopingarner; son, Kevin Hoopingarner; grandson, Christopher Apostolakis; and sisters, Peggy Micke Perry and Jeanie Challands Perry. Visitation will be Thursday, April 10, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel, 3333 East Thompson Road, Indianapolis, Indiana. Graveside services will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9350 East Washington Street, Indianapolis.
