Charlotte Dean Folkening

Charlotte Dean Folkening, 72, of Greenfield, Indiana was called home on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 to join our Heavenly Father by his side. She was born on October 8, 1953 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Floyd W. Medsker and Pauline W. (Wilson) Medsker. At an early age, Charlotte found joy in babysitting relatives, helping her brother deliver newspapers and working at the Indiana State Fair. A graduate of Warren Central High School, she went on to earn an associate degree in Medical Assisting from Aristotle College. She was blessed with a giving heart and a generous spirit and was committed to spreading kindness and compassion throughout her life. Those who knew her well knew that she never met a stranger and always made sure that anyone who visited her home was well fed. Charlotte was a member of the Red Hat Society, an organization dedicated to fun, friendship and sisterhood. She was also a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid where she helped create Braille Bibles for the blind and assisted the elderly and nursing home residents by providing clothing and care packages. She also served as a Cub Scout leader for her sons’ Scout troop. On July 22, 1972, she married her high school sweetheart, Douglas C. Folkening and together they built a life guided by faith and love. Charlotte was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life. Charlotte was the heart of her family and sought every opportunity to bring her loved ones together. She cherished organizing family reunions and hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. She took great joy in collecting and sharing family stories, weaving them into tales touched by her wonderful sense of humor. Charlotte’s home, like her heart, was always welcoming-filled with warmth, laughter and unconditional love. Charlotte was a creative soul with a passion for crafts, finding joy in crocheting, flower arranging, drawing and writing poetry inspired by her faith, the Christmas season and her grandchildren. She lovingly donated crocheted hats and blankets to cancer patients and children’s hospitals. Charlotte was also a devoted fan of the Indianapolis Colts and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on her favorite team. She will be remembered for her generosity, kind heart, unwavering love and selfless dedication to her family and friends. Her kindness and compassion touched many, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives. Charlotte’s life was a legacy of generosity, faith and fellowship that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her. Charlotte’s memory will be forever cherished by her loving family, dear friends and all whose lives were blessed by her presence. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Douglas C. Folkening; her devoted sons, Bill Mathew (Cindy), Aaron Folkening (Joni), Jereme Folkening and Nicholas Folkening (Jennifer); her brother, Randy Medsker Sr.; her sister, Marjorie Medsker (Mark Herndon); 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Douglas C. Folkening Jr., and 10 siblings. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel, 3333 E. Thompson Road, Indianapolis. An additional visitation will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 6630 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46203. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 6630 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46203.
