Carolyn Ann McGuire

Carolyn Ann McGuire, Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, fortified by the graces of Extreme Unction, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the age of 96. She was born on April 13, 1929, to George Louis Steffy and Elizabeth Agatha (née Harmon) and was one of ten siblings, eight sisters, and one brother. Carolyn grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she graduated from Howe High School in 1947. She went on to proudly work her way through Butler University, earning a degree in physical education. Following her graduation, she began her career as a teacher, a role that reflected her lifelong dedication to service and education. Carolyn married John Francis McGuire on January 4, 1955. Together they built a beautiful life and were blessed with six children – three sons and three daughters. Their family grew to include 19 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Carolyn had a deep and unwavering devotion to her Catholic faith, especially to Our Lady of Sorrows and the Poor Souls in Purgatory. She worked tirelessly to preserve the Traditional Latin Mass, and was a strong defender of the unborn, often praying peacefully outside of clinics. She volunteered for many years at nursing homes and loved to make rosaries and restore religious statues in her free time. Her faith and family were the two greatest priorities of her life, and she lived each day guided by those values. After the death of her beloved husband, John, in May of 2001, Carolyn moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to be near her son and daughter. In 2005, she returned to Indiana and eventually settled in Greenwood, where she lived for 20 years and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Her final months were spent at The Springs of Mooresville, where she was lovingly cared for. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John McGuire; her son, Timothy McGuire; her son-in-law, Jay Schenck; her daughter-in-law, Susan McGuire; her great-grandson, Charles Kunkel; and her siblings, Mary Louise Spiegl, Gene Littlejohn, Marjorie Van Tassel, George Steffy, Janet McMillan, Priscilla Dalton, Becky Holly, Madonna Steffy and Patricia Steffy. She is survived by her children, Maggie Walker (Dave), Patrick McGuire, Dennis McGuire, Ann Schenck, and Elizabeth Grenke (Joseph); her granddaughter, Maria Kunkel (Philip); as well as 18 other grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, January 30, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel, 3333 East Thompson Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 245 West Broadway Street, Greenwood. Carolyn will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her devotion to family, and her unwavering strength. Her legacy lives on through the many generations she nurtured and loved.
