Ann Schmidt McGuire Brown

Ann Schmidt McGuire Brown, 87, passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2022. Born on June 4, 1935, to the late Heinrich and Isabelle Early Schmidt, she lived most of her life in the Irvington neighborhood in Indianapolis, and later in New Palestine and Carmel. She attended Indianapolis Public Schools #77, #57, and Thomas Carr Howe High School before graduating from Tech High School in 1953. Journalism and writing were early interests, and she studied for a year at Columbia College in Missouri before meeting James McGuire on July 4, 1954 at Knobby’s Restaurant in Indianapolis. Ann and Jim married on October 30, 1954. A year later they started a family and lived in Bloomington while Jim studied at Indiana University. During the 1960s, Ann decided teaching was her calling, and she studied at IUPUI to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She began teaching at IPS #37 in 1970. She also acquired her administrator’s license and served as a co- or assistant principal for several years. She spent over 40 years teaching, acquiring many wonderful friends along the way. After retiring from IPS, she continued to work and volunteer in the schools. Ann had a lifelong love of all animals, especially dogs. When speaking of her childhood, she often spoke fondly of her Collie named Fellow. Later in life, and for many years, she rescued Corgis in need of a foster home. Neighbors found it inspiring to see Ann pushing a walker while holding the leash of her maltipoo, Betsy, which she did almost daily until the age of 86. Ann enjoyed many summers over the years at Tippecanoe Lake. She enjoyed quilting, antiquing, traveling, and spending time with her many friends and family. Ann is survived by children Jeff (Sue) McGuire, Doug McGuire, and Doreen (Kevin) Crenshaw, Ferg (Gina) Brown, Cindy (Ron) Gatlin, and Penny (Tom) Hagler. Her grandchildren are Shannon Alcorn, Darren and Darcy McGuire, Anthony Brown, Amanda (Dave) Yocum, Natalie Brown, Corrie Jo (Flynt) Gibbs, Cody (Jessie) Gatlin, Tracy (Mike) Schofield, Ryan (Caitlin) Crenshaw and Ami Crenshaw. Grandson, Jeremy Brown preceded Ann in death. Great grandchildren are Madysin Alcorn, Savana Alcorn, Aiden Brown, Derrick Brown, Cricket Gibbs, Roan Gibbs, Cedar Gibbs, Benton Gatlin, Tripp Gatlin, Emma Crenshaw, Erica Hockman and Jake Dennis. She is the oldest of five siblings all of whom survive her. They are Maureen (John) Foley, Carl (Donna) Schmidt, Pat (Bob) Sargeant, and Jill (Dick) Rice. Ann was preceded in death by husbands Jim McGuire and Ferg Brown. Visitation is Friday October 7th at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington Street, from 4-8 PM. Family and friends are welcome to meet at the 34th Street entrance to Crown Hill Cemetery (Boulevard Place and 34th Street) at 12:45 PM Saturday, October 8th for burial at 1 PM.
