Vera Mae Espenlaub Schornhorst, of Carmel, IN passed away peacefully April 2, 2021. She was born in Evansville, IN January 29, 1929 to Emil and Rose Espenlaub, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Bosse High School, Evansville class of 1947, then Evansville University for two years before marrying Rudolph (Rudy) Schornhorst February 11, 1950. Rudy preceded her in death September 28, 1983. Vera worked for Bell Telephone in Lafayette while Rudy attended Purdue, North Manchester School Systems and Butler University Irwin Library as Circulation Librarian. She also finished her BA in Library Science at Butler while working there. After retiring she began selling AVON for extra cash and earned several Mrs. Albee’s for her high sales. During her life she enjoyed camping, family cook outs, Espenlaub family reunions, Bosse HS class reunions – the last one was her 70th, day trips to state parks, church functions and volunteer opportunities to serve God’s people in need. She had been a Deacon at OPPC, attended Sunday school regularly, was the church librarian for many years, was an active member of the church ladies group “The Lunch Bunch”, and taught aqua size classes at the Carmel Racquet Club. She traveled to several places in Europe, the holy land & Egypt, and in the US many places with family or friends; her last big trip was to the Grand Canyon including a jeep tour, but one of her favorite spots was the Douglas-Schornhorst family cottage in Wheatley, Canada. Vera was known for her cooking, especially her German potato salad, date nut pudding and “ham” salad – which her brother-in-law Conrad quickly learned was actually bologna salad. Vera & Rudy’s children include Eric Schornhorst (Eileen), Linda Schornhorst, David Schornhorst (Donna), Michael Schornhorst (Candace) and Debra Schornhorst who preceded her in death on February 28, 2016. Grandchidren, Kevin Schornhorst (Joanna), Keith Schornhorst (Amanda) – Eric’s sons; Elizabeth Williams (Patrick) – Linda’s daughter and Connor Schornhorst – David’s son. Step-grands, Tammie (Jason) Gross and Heidi (Jeremy) Mcguffey Denton – Michael’s daughters and their children and grandchildren. Great-grandchildren, Will Schornhorst, Cooper Schornhorst, Max Schornhorst, Taylor Schornhorst and Paul Schornhorst. Her brother & sister-in-law, Conrad and sue Schornhorst from Evansville. Also, beloved nephew, Carl Schornhorst (Beverly), Katherine and Charles. She was preceded in death by brother-in-law & his wife, Charles Rae Schornhorst (Charlene); sister-in-law, Katherine Schornhorst Beard (Gregory); several Espenlaub cousins; and dear friends, Herbert and Gertrude Paxson. Services will be at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church in Carmel, 1605 E. 106th St., Indianapolis, IN 46280, Saturday, April 10th, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, visitation with service immediately following at 1:00 PM, and a graveside service at Oaklawn Cemetery in the Garden of Eternal Peace next to her husband Rudy.
