August 12, 1956 - January 1, 2022
Susan Kay (Greene) Bennett, 65, a bubbly, kindhearted soul with an unwavering devotion to her children and grandchildren, passed away January 1, 2022 at her home in Clarksville, Indiana. She was born August 12, 1956 on a military base near Houston, Texas and her family later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she attended Arlington High School. Susie studied social work at Indiana University, where she served as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Her natural warmth helped her excel as a family services case worker and later as a customer service professional with an innate ability to patiently lead. She spoke frequently of her joyful upbringing, often describing her roots as “Lawrence Welk” on one side of the family, and “Hee Haw” on the other. A middle child, Susie had a distinctive ability to view both sides of every story and was a thoughtful mediator. Susie loved life. In her youth, she obtained a scuba diving license, rode roller coasters, and enjoyed camping. She dreamt of adventure and hoped to someday get a tattoo and skydive. She loved driving with the windows down and the music cranked up. The water was her happy place, and her favorite was the beach at Siesta Key, Florida where she spent many vacations with friends and family. Susie also had an unwavering devotion to coffee. Drinking it morning, noon, and night, she went through coffee makers like candy. She loved music from the 1960s and 70s and saw Jackson Browne in concert for her 65th birthday. She was skilled at the family favorite card game Canasta and passed her talents on to her children. Susie died peacefully in her home of natural causes on New Year’s Day, surrounded by photos and trinkets that reminded her of her family. Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Paul F. Greene, Jr., and Rosemary (Cline) Greene; and uncle, Ernest Cline. She is survived by her daughter, Emily Rose Bennett and son-in-law, Khalil AlHajal, of Detroit, Michigan; son, Drew Larson Bennett, of Reno, Nevada; grandchildren, Preston Bennett, 9, and Nay’via “Navy” Bennett, 6, of Reno, Nevada; siblings, Nancy Timothy, of Aurora, Illinois, Carrie Wolf of Dublin, Ohio and Steven F. Greene of Madison, Indiana; and her beloved cat, Sam. Visitation will be Monday, January 10, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Road, Fishers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
