Shirley V. (Rife) Spangler

Shirley V. (Rife) Spangler, 78, of New Palestine, IN, passed away December 29, 2018 at The Legacy at Springhurst. She was born in Poplar Bluff, MO, March 9, 1940. Shirley was the youngest child of Clarence and Opal Rife. She graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1958 and attended Trevecca Nazarene University. Shirley married Roger P. Spangler on May 26, 1962. Shirley began working at the University of Indianapolis (Indiana Central College) in 1962 while Roger attended the University. She continued to work there in various capacities until she retired in 1999. She then worked as a church secretary at First Church of the Nazarene. Shirley was a faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene her entire life. Shirley was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother and grandmother. Left behind to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Rachelle (Jeff) Wright of New Palestine and Jennifer (Roy) Kleeman of Fairland; precious grandchildren, Whitney (Austin) Perkins, Brock Wright; and Mitch and Lucas Kleeman. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Ann Askren; her brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law, Jim and Carolyn Spangler, Ed and Karen Spangler, Sharon and Dan Hayes, Mark and Karen Spangler; Frances Rife, and Lemell Rife. She also treasured all of her many loving nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dear friends, the Columbus Group. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Roger; her parents, Clarence and Opal Rife; and her brothers, Lee Rife, William Rife and Richard Rife. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at The Legacy at Springhurst and Hancock Hospice for their tender, loving care of our mother and grandmother. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St. Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at Brookville Road Community Church, 7480 US 52, New Palestine, IN 46163. Memorial contributions will be given to offset the medical costs of Shirley’s eleven year old great-nephew, Cam, who is currently undergoing treatment for Lymphoblastic Leukemia. www.shirleybrothers.com.
