July 4, 1945 - April 3, 2021
Phillip Richard “Phil” Popp, 75, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Indiana University Hospital, Indianapolis. Phil was born in Covington, KY on July 4, 1945 to Henry Popp and Frances (Wiwi) Popp. Phil was a 1963 graduate of Newport Catholic High School, where he was one of Northern Kentucky’s all-time best high school basketball players. He received an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Bellarmine College in Louisville, KY. Phil was inducted into the Newport Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Bellarmine College Athletic Hall of Fame. Phil briefly worked at Kroger and then was drafted into the United States Army. He was an Army Air Traffic Controller in the Vietnam War. After his military service, Phil was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He provided on-the-job training for many newly hired air traffic controllers and loved “working” airplanes for 36 ½ years. He retired from the FAA in 2006 and continued his passion for aviation as a contractor at the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center. Phil’s true passion was his love of music, extensive collection of vinyl records and sports cards, and any opportunity to get down on the dance floor. He enjoyed relaxing by his pool, playing cards, and trips to the casino. He cherished tailgating and Purdue football games. Phil loved spending time surrounded by his family and friends who loved him very much. His gift of gab, strong will, and kind heart made him memorable to anyone who crossed his path. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vincent Popp; and sisters, Dolores (Bob) Wesselman and Kathleen Niece. Phil is survived by his wife, Jo Ann (Delaney) Popp; son, Michael (Jennifer) Popp; daughter, Jennifer Popp; grandchildren, Austin and Rachel Popp; granddogs, Smokey and Izzy Popp; sister, Jeannine Holtz; brother, Frederick (Becky) Popp; and several nieces and nephews.
