Marjorie June Goodwin

Marjorie June Goodwin was born April 20th, 1931, and passed away on April 18th, 2025 - just a couple days shy of the wise old age of 94. She mothered 4 children and faithfully served as Grandma and/or Nana to 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with another one on the way. Grandma/Nana June was a proud woman and devout Hoosier who loved just about everything from Indiana. She would fiercely defend the quality of Indiana tomatoes with anyone who would listen. She knew how to make a proper short crust for pies. She taught me that canned peaches and cottage cheese was 'a salad' and was a great scratch cook. As a child of the depression, she appreciated the value of a hard-earned dollar, the integrity involved in building the family business with her husband Don and the relationships that went with it, and above all else - taking care of her people. She was a lover of Hoosier artwork and spent many a day in Nashville, Indiana with her friends from the Arts Community there. It was important for her to do everything she could to help herself for as long as she was able and to be self-reliant. As a young man, I remember growing up and spending time in Indiana with her and my grandpa both in Indy and down in Brown County on the family Christmas Tree farm. Here I learned the value of a hard day's work out in the sun shearing Christmas trees in 90-degree heat and 100% humidity. I also learned the joy of devouring 2 or 3 cheeseburgers (with Velveeta of course) on my lunch break followed by a piece of pie and a 20-minute nap. On those hot days, my main motivation was finishing the day so I could go back to the house and swim in the lake to clean off, have a terrific meal that Grandma faithfully prepared by 6, to fish at dusk, and to fall asleep by about 9 or so after watching Newhart or Cheers. Then to get up at 5:30 am and do it all again. Life was simpler then and I appreciate what I learned from by my Grandma and Grandpa during those years. Many of us in our family share similar experiences and gratitude for who both Don and June were to us. Grandma June lived a long life with my Grandpa Don who passed away a couple of years ago. She was fiercely devoted to him, and we hope that they will now meet again, hold hands, sing songs, and reminisce about the good old days. We will miss her spirit, wit, and love. And pies. Lots of pies. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street.
