Joyce Slack Petry Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Joyce Slack Petry, 88, of Indianapolis, passed from this life July 19, 2022. She was born June 17, 1934, to the late Leon Slack and Leah (Hollingsworth) Slack. She married her high school sweetheart, Glenn Petry, September 12, 1954, and they had three sons, Steve, Dave and Dan Petry. Joyce graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and worked at Indiana Bell Telephone Co. for six years, as a teacher’s aide in Special Education in Warren Township for four years and Perry Township for three years; a legal secretary for six years; for the Orlando Convention Bureau for seven years; and as a teacher’s assistant in Mt. Comfort United Methodist Preschool for four years. Of her various jobs, Joyce enjoyed working with children the most. She found it especially rewarding to teach the mentally and physically challenged and continued to keep in touch with a few of her students. Joyce enjoyed being with her family. She and Glenn moved back to Indianapolis in 1997, after living in Florida for 13 years, because they wanted to spend more time with their children and grandson. For many years, Joyce took pictures of relatives, friends and special events, and enjoyed sending copies to those people involved. She rarely left home without her camera. She also took pleasure in keeping in touch with relatives and friends by sending greeting cards for special events or just to say, “I’m thinking of you!” Joyce is survived by her children, Steve Petry, David (Alicia) Petry and Dan (Kim) Petry; grandsons, Michael Petry and Nicholas Petry; granddaughter, Sasha Petry; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Glenn Petry; brothers, Ken Slack and Ted Slack; sister, Barbara Slack Cardwell; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Petry. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, July 28, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street. Entombment will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
