John J. McCardle

John J. McCardle 83, of Indianapolis, passed away January 2, 2017. He was born January 20, 1933 to John W. and Ruth Bills McCardle in Indianapolis. John graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1950 and from Butler University in 1954. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He enlisted in the Air Force after college and retired from military service in 1988 as a Lieutenant Colonel. John worked in Public Relations at Allison Transmission and after retirement from his working life, he volunteered at Methodist Hospital for over 2 decades. He volunteered over 10,000 hours and proudly represented Methodist hospital at the lobby desks and also gave VIP tours of the hospital. His passion in life was collecting and playing musical instruments. He had affiliations with many local community bands and was proficient on Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Tuba and Baritone. His collection of instruments and literature was his pride and joy. He was a regular at local auction houses and delighted in acquiring antique instruments and researching their history. Over the years he also owned classic cars including a 1957 Corvette and 1941 Cadillac. He was a member of many organizations and societies associated with instruments and with automobiles. Visitation will be Sunday, January 8, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 5:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St. Indianapolis. John is survived by his daughter, Lynne McCardle Stern and grandchildren, Natalie L. Smith and Richard F. Stern. John was preceded in death by his parents, half-brother, Clyde McCardle and son, Matthew J. McCardle.
