Dr. Georgia A. Bowman, 93, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away January 2, 2021 at home surrounded by family. She was born May 25, 1927 in Anderson, Indiana the daughter of James L. and Nellie Skaggs Benefiel both deceased. She graduated from Anderson High School and attended Ball State University receiving both BA and MA degrees graduating Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude. Scholastic honors included graduating fifth in her class, was a member of Kappa Kappa Sorority, and four National Honorary Fraternities (Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Gamma Mu, Sigma Zeta and Sigma Tau Delta). Later in life she graduated from Nova Southeastern University with her Doctorate in Education. Georgia married Edward F. Bowman December 1949. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage. Edward preceded her in death March 2004. Georgia was employed with the Indianapolis Public Schools for 36 years serving as an elementary teacher, a General Curriculum consultant and Elementary School principal serving schools 95 and 102. She was named Principal of the Year by the Principals Association, recipient of the Eleventh District Principal of the Year Award, member of the IPS Foundation Board, Leader of Principals Collegial Support Group and supported many initiatives that contributed to elementary education. Her visit by invitation to the White House in 1976 as representative for the National Council of Administrative Women in Education represented a special career highlight. Georgia served as past President for the Indianapolis Elementary Principals’ Association; Indianapolis Council of Administrative Women; State President Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; State President of Alpha Epsilon; State President of Indiana School Women; served National Council of Administrative Women in Education; State President of Indiana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (IASCD); member Fortnightly Literary Club; Woman’s Department Club and Catherine Merrill Literary Club. She also served on Delta Kappa Gamma’s International Board in several roles including Chairman of Professional Affairs. Georgia was an active member in the Indianapolis Propylaeum serving as Co-Chair of the Investment Club; Chairman of Poetry Club; Auditor Woman’s Department Club. She also was a participant in the Indianapolis Symphony Society; Irvington Historical Society; Benton House; Indiana State Retired Teachers; AAUW; Phi Lambda Theta; and Fortnightly Literary Club. Survivors include son, Mark E. Bowman (Lori); grandchildren, Alex E. Bowman (Lindsey) and Emily C. Tucker (Nathan); step-grandchildren, Emily Stanke (preceded in death), Abby Jerrell and Alison Jerrell; and great-grandchildren, Ellie Tucker, Olivia Johnson and Randy Stanke. Visitation will be Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 12 noon until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street. Interment will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
