Frank D. Espich
March 5, 1951 - April 24, 2022
Frank D. Espich, 71, of Indianapolis, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022. He was born March 5, 1951 in New Palestine, Indiana to the late Billy G. and Betty Lou Espich. Frank was a 1969 graduate of New Palestine High School. He received his degree in broadcasting from Career Academy in Ohio and went on to become a disc jockey for WDRK Radio Station, Greenville, OH. In 1972, Frank was hired at the Indianapolis Star News as a janitor, then left to become Mayor Hudnut’s personal photographer until 1983. He then received a three-month internship with the Indianapolis Star and became a full-time photographer. Frank had a knack for putting his subjects at ease, seeing them for who they were, and caring about them. He was instrumental in helping new photographers find their way, always underlining the need to form relationships with the subjects they were shooting. Frank had a flair for fashion, was an amazing storyteller and had a quick wit. He retired in 2015 after a 31-year career in photojournalism. His legacy will live on through the work of other photojournalists who sought advice and mentoring. A Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 East Washington Street. Frank is survived by his brother, Billy J. Espich (Debbie); significant other, Pamela Konchinsky; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, David G. Espich; and sister-in-law, Emily Espich. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 681405, Indianapolis, IN 46268-1405.
