David James Stewart

David James Stewart, Passed away on June 10, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. Dave was born July 29, 1937, to Jessie (Hadlock) and Kenneth LeMoyne Stewart in Indianapolis. He went to elementary and middle school at School #77 and attended Irvington United Methodist Church, remaining an active member his entire life. In 1956, he graduated from Howe High School where he lettered in basketball, baseball, football, and track. He attended Hanover College where he played football and met his future wife, Catharine “Kitty” Strange. Dave began teaching after graduating in 1960. He and Kitty married on August 19, 1961. In 1962 Dave accepted a teaching job at Howe and the couple moved to Indianapolis. Dave taught economics and government and was the head football coach for eight years. He taught at Tech High School before retiring in 2001, ending 38 years of service to IPS. Throughout his life, Dave worked hard and expected the same from others. He was a great example of kindness, curiosity, and honesty. Faith was his guide; friends were his treasures; family was his pride and absolute joy. He is predeceased by his parents; his brothers; and granddaughter, Adelaide Johnson. Dave is survived by his wife, Kitty; sons, Jim (Shelley), Jon (Maria) and Dan (Amy); daughter, Amy Stewart Johnson; as well as grandchildren, Emily Stewart (Frank Bonachera), Henry Stewart (Erin), Josie, Gracie and Hadley Johnson, Emerson, Spencer and Campbell Stewart; and great-grandchildren, Elena and Francisco Bonachera. He was a father figure to Irina Moskvicheva Nix (Jeremy) and a Poppy to Polina and Maksim Nix. Services will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Irvington United Methodist Church, 30 North Audubon Rd., 46219. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor and funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Irvington United Methodist Church, 30 N. Audubon Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46219; Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, 615 N. Alabama, Suite 122, Indianapolis, IN 46204; or New Hope of Indiana, 8450 N. Payne Rd., Suite 300, Indianapolis, IN 46268. Final care and arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel.
