Dr. Thomas Harold Beavers

Dr. Thomas Harold Beavers, DDS, 96, of Indianapolis, passed away January 11, 2015. He was born November 6, 1918 in Moreland, IN, to the late William A. and Bertha Deardorff Beavers. Tom was a graduate of Washington High School, and he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Indiana University. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during WWII in the Philippines and Japan. Tom married Helen Schultz Beavers and began his private dental practice of 44 years in Irvington. He was an Associate Professor of Diagnosis and Oral Medicine of Indiana University School of Dentistry for 27 years; a dental consultant for the Medicaid department of Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 6 years and Connecticut General Insurance for 11 years. Tom was a fellow of the American College of Dentists, a member and delegate of Kappa Upsilon Omicron (Honorary Dental Fraternity), and a member of the Indiana Dental Society. He was a past board member of the Indianapolis Dental Society, past Secretary of the John Geller Dental Research Group, and past chairman of the Retired Dentists of Indianapolis Dental Society. Tom lectured at the American Dental Association Meetings, 1960 Table Clinics, the Prosthodontic Society and the Mid Continent Dental Congress. Tom was a charter member of Irvington Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, Trustee, Deacon and past President of the Samaritan Club. He was a zone chairman for the Lions Club 1948, a member of the Masonic Lodge Royal Arch Masons, the Scottish Rite and the Murat Shrine. Tom was also a member of American Legion Post #4, the Museum of Art and the Parahesian Club. Visitation will be Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon at Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 Johnson Ave. Tom is survived by his wife, Lillian Leonard Beavers; son, Thomas A. Beavers (Cheryl); daughter, Ann Cochran (George); stepchildren, Gerald Leonard and Carolyn Leonard Terry; grandchildren, Scott, Gregory and Kristin Cochran; five step-grandchildren and seven step-great- grandchildren. Tom’s first wife, Helen Schultz Beavers, preceded him in death after 45 years of marriage. Brothers, Judge Addison Beavers and William A. Beavers also preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Irvington Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund and/or the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel.
