Sidney Earl Brong

86, went to be with our Lord and Savior very suddenly while at home on Thursday, September 2, 2010, recuperating after minor surgery. He is survived by his three children, Steve Brong of Tucson, AZ, Scott Brong (Lisa) of Noblesville, In, and Sue Cox (Lee) of Greenwood, IN; two beloved grandchildren, Deanna �DeeDee� Cox and Evan Robert Brong. Also surviving are two nieces and a nephew and his sister-in-law in Omaha, Nebraska. Another close surviving family member is his cousin, Fay Kanally Zdinak, of Middletown, PA. Also survived by his special companion of several fun-filled years, Barbara Glenn and her dog, his pal Irish. They dined and danced with many special friends. Sid was preceded in death by his �bride� (as he loved to call her) of 55 years, Helen E. Brong; his brother, Gene E. Brong; and his parents, Clinton Earl and Estella Brong. Sid was a WWII Navy Veteran, proud to serve on the USS Lake Champlain, and was very active with the American Legion, being past Post Commander, Adjutant and current Service Officer of the John H. Holliday, Jr. Post #186, in Broad Ripple. Enjoying a hobby with classic cars, he attended shows around the Midwest, winning awards and trophies for his �Merc� convertible. He also enjoyed flying, obtaining his private pilot license at a very early age. He retired from his own company, Van Brong Pneumatics, Inc., in 1995, but remained as a consultant to others. He is a past officer of Schwitzer Corporation. Sid loved the Big Bands and enjoyed years of playing his trombone in the school marching band and dance bands, and entertained the family every 4th of July by playing taps and retiring the flag before all the fireworks began at dark. He was a graduate of Sheffield, PA High School, Parks Air College in St. Louis, MO, and got his Masters in aeronautical engineering at Penn State University. Go Nittany Lions! Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel is handling cremation arrangements and there will be a Memorial Service at Castleton United Methodist Church where he was a member, on Friday, September 10, 2010, at 12:00 Noon, with his pastor, C. Mac Hamon officiating. Friends may gather and meet with the family 30 minutes prior to the service. Private interment at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be in honor of Sid�s Big Heart! To the American Heart Association, the Humane Society of Indianapolis for his love of dogs, or any of the American Legion Pillars programs, such as Family Scholarship and Flag Advocacy.
