Ronald Wayne Warren

Ronald Wayne Warren, 81, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, passed away on February 28, 2023. He was born on April 9, 1941, to the late Herbert Lewis Warren and Dorothy (Hill) Warren. Ron was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School, and he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from May 1963-May 1966, with stations in both Texas and a 1-year stay in Germany. He married Marie Shepherd on October 4, 1963, and worked for United Parcel Service (UPS) as a Porter for 35 years. After retirement, Ron loved to keep busy with many jobs and volunteer activities. He was a driver for Shirley Brothers Mortuaries, Security Officer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, an Election Poll Worker in his precinct, a groundworker at Paul’s Nursery Indy, and at age 80 began working for the Dollar General 2 blocks from his house. He volunteered at the Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the ICAN Food Pantry at Downey Avenue, gave blood faithfully to the Indianapolis Blood Center for 50 years, and had almost 6,000 volunteer hours over 17 years as a Volunteer and Community Hospital East Auxiliary Board Chairperson. He brought the donuts to his monthly Woodworking Club meetings, loved gardening, growing cacti, classical music, recycling, and helping his neighbors with their lawns. In addition to his jobs and volunteer activities, his true passion was the Church. He grew up and spent his younger married life in Englewood Christian Church, actively involved in a variety of ways. In midlife, his family began attending their neighborhood church, Meadlawn Christian Church, where being a Deacon he was extremely active in the leadership, and also took responsibility for the physical caretaking of the building and grounds. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 7, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington Street with funeral services there at 2:00 p.m. For those unable to attend the service will be livestreamed and available by clicking on the following link: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/8896988228 Ron is survived by his daughter, Susie Steel (Kevin); grandchildren, Blake Steel (Kelly), Ashley Steel, and Athena Steel; and nieces and nephews (Linda Stamper, Terry Stamper, Danny Kelly, David Kelly, Steve Kelly, and Kevin Hilbert). He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Marie Warren; and sisters, Betty Hilbert (Palmer) and Doris Kelly (Ulyess). Ron’s Community Hospital East Auxiliary Board recently discussed raised garden beds to grow veggies and herbs for the food pantry efforts and an outside area with picnic tables. The family intends to have a named tribute, in Ron’s honor, as a part of the Auxiliary effort.
