Robert "Bob" Alexander

Robert “Bob” Alexander, Of New Palestine, Indiana passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026 at the age of 96. He was born in Indianapolis on January 14, 1930 to Frank and Vera Alexander; he was their only child. Bob was raised in Indianapolis and graduated from Arsenal Tech High School before joining the United States Navy in the summer of 1948. He served honorably and was aboard the USS Latimer (APA-152) during the Korean War. Upon leaving the Navy, Bob applied his mechanical aptitude and keen attention to detail to a successful career in architectural drafting. Over the years, he contributed to numerous large-scale projects, including the Indianapolis City-County Building. His skills were highly regarded by senior experts, and junior colleagues remember him as a generous mentor who was always willing to share his knowledge. In the later years of his career, Bob founded his own drafting business, allowing him to focus on select projects that he found especially meaningful and enjoyable. Bob married his first wife, Elizabeth, in 1950. They shared a wonderful 47 years together before her passing in 1997. Their life together was marked by many happy and cherished moments and was blessed with two sons, Steve and Kerry. Bob had a lifelong passion for cars, a love he shared with his sons and he was a successful drag racer. He especially loved the Chevy Corvette and raced his modified street-level Vettes at several events throughout the years, mostly at Muncie Dragway in Muncie, IN. His competitive nature also shined in tennis; he was involved in adult league play for many years. He found great joy in the sport and in passing along the enthusiasm to family and friends. Bob was an active member at Old Bethel United Methodist Church and it was there that he met his wife, Charlene, whom he married in 1999. Bob and Charlene shared countless enjoyable times together, playing golf, celebrating with family, socializing with friends, serving the church, cheering on the Pacers, Fever, Colts, traveling throughout the United States, and, in recent years, completing a lot of jigsaw puzzles side by side. Bob touched many lives with his quick wit and easygoing manner. He lived a full and happy life; his absence will be deeply felt, especially by his wife, Charlene. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband and loving father by his sons, Steve Alexander and Kerry Alexander (Lisa Kelly); his stepdaughters, Pauletta Rist (Shae Ramsey) and Lisa Gant (Tracy) and will remember his love and respect for their mother, his steadfast support throughout their lives, and his impressive hat collection. Bob also loved his grandchildren, Bryan, Erika, Ashley, Brittany (deceased), and Hunter; as well as his five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday, April 27, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street, with funeral services there Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. A private burial will follow at Clayton Cemetery. Special thanks to Springhurst Health Campus and Brighton Hospice for their care and attention over these last few months.
