Patty Lou (Longmire) Buchanan-Ostendorf

Patty Lou (Longmire) Buchanan-Ostendorf, 99, was called home to her eternal reward on March 24, 2026. She was born November 1, 1926 in Indianapolis, to Everet William Longmire and Hattie Frances (LaFollette) Longmire. Pat graduated from Arsenal Tech. At age 17, she married Army Air Corps Lt. James Lincoln Buchanan on August 16, 1944. They lived at 1536 N. Sheridan Avenue in Indianapolis for over 43 years until Jim’s passing. Jim and Pat raised three children, Rodney Jay Buchanan, Joan Marie (Buchanan) Meek, and Jean Ann (Buchanan) Williams. She married Paul Henry Ostendorf in 2002. Pat is remembered for her unshaken faith in Jesus Christ, a love of nature, the charitable gifts of her time, and her artistic talents in painting and pottery. The Buchanans were members of Old Bethel UMC in Indianapolis. She volunteered her time at Community Hospital East sewing puppy pillows for young patients. Jim and Pat cherished vacations to the American West across Colorado, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. They returned many times to Estes Park and the Navajo and Zuni reservations. The Buchanans hiked countless national parks. One of Pat’s favorite trails was Maroon Bells in Colorado. Her grandchildren fondly remember the endless hours she focused on them. Pat involved her grandchildren in crafting, creek stomping, baking raisin cookies, and exploring the outdoors. Her family gathers every October in Yellowwood State Forest in Brown County, a tradition that Pat began over 50 years ago. Pat was preceded in death by her husbands, Jim Buchanan and Paul Ostendorf; son, Rev. Rodney Jay Buchanan; son-in-law, Gary Gene Williams; half-brother, Harry Johnson of Tipton; and an infant brother, Everett Longmire, Jr. She leaves behind daughters, Joan Meek and Jean Williams; daughter-in-law, Sue Buchanan; and son-in-law, Daniel Meek. Pat is survived by six grandchildren, Lori (Buchanan) Morris of Colorado Springs, Lisa (Buchanan) Strayer of Murfreesboro, David Meek of Phoenix, Julie Meek of Indianapolis, Jennifer (Meek) Harter of San Diego, and Jill (Meek) Landers of Noblesville; and 17 great-grandchildren. Her gentle nature, kind words, patience, and devotion to her faith are a model for the generations of her family she leaves behind. Visitation will be Friday, April 10, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street. Private entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Old Bethel UMC Children’s Programs. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
