Owen "Les" Nell

Owen Leslie Nell, 85, of Indianapolis, died November 9, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was proceeded in death by his wife of 57 years, Elaine M. Nell, his parents Owen and Helen Nell and his younger brother Graham Nell. He is survived by his brothers Richard Nell and John Nell, his three children: Debi Loehrer(Patrick), Steve Nell (Bozena) and Laura Wood ( Barry Paige), nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Born February 7, 1932 and raised in Indianapolis, “Les” spent his childhood playing basketball in the park. As a ten year old he played trumpet for the Knot Hole Gang at Indianapolis Indians games. He was an active boy with a lot of talents both musically and athletically. Les graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1950. He was a member of the Varsity Basketball team. He earned a Political Science degree from Wabash College in1956 and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Les committed many years in support of both Wabash College and Beta Theta Pi. Les spent 35 years in banking in both Indianapolis and South Florida. He spent 18 years at Indiana National Bank then continued his career as the Chief Executive Officer at several banks in South Florida. He held leadership positions in the Chambers of Commerce in both Miami, FL and Boca Raton, FL as well as holding leadership positions in several banking professional organizations throughout his career. He and his wife Elaine enjoyed spending time together on the golf course, traveling, sailing around the Bahamas and keeping up with all their grandchildren. In retirement Les was a common face at the bus stop picking up grand kids, at baseball games, hockey and lacrosse games, in the carpool line, orthodontist office, gymnastics and cheerleading events and the Cathedral football tailgate line. He was proud of his nine grandchildren affectionately telling them regularly that they were “Great Americans”. Visitation is Saturday November 25 12:00 PM- 2:00PM at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Road. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 2:00PM.
