Opal A. (Chandler) Scott

Opal A. (Chandler) Scott, 99, of Greenwood, IN, was called home on January 25, 2017, to join her beloved husband, Charles E. Scott, who preceded her in the arms of the Lord nineteen years ago, following sixty years of a devoted marriage. Opal was born in Indianapolis on March 23, 1917 as one of six siblings. Four have predeceased her – Gerald, Theodore & William Chandler and Francis Weis. She is survived by her youngest sister, Barbara Southwood. Opal is also survived by her daughter, Linda Walker Maguire and son-in-law Marvin of Indianapolis, her son, William D. Scott and daughter-in-law Mary of Brewster, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Dawn Walker McCarty, Angela Walker Bryan, Sandy Walker Green, Anne Scott Campbell and Erin Scott Flaherty; great-grandchildren, Kellee Repass, Caitlin McCarty, Noel Morical, Casey Torres, Mia Misener and Henry Campbell; and great-great grandchildren Kameron Cress and Isabella and Jaxson Torres. Opal and Charles grew up as members of Victory Memorial Methodist Church and both attended Arsenal Technical High School. They later married in the church where they remained lifelong active members. Opal was the oldest living member when the church closed its doors following a long history that played an important role in both of their lives. Early in their marriage, Charles built their house in the southeast corner of Marion County in a corn field, known locally as “the little corn field house”. They remained in and expanded that home for the next fifty-one years. Opal, a city girl moving to rural farm country, joined the Southeastern Home Economics Club where she made lifelong friends and learned the ways of rural farm living and shared her skills as seamstress, baker and homemaker. She was a 4-H leader and custom made many wedding dresses for the young women in the community, as well as for her daughter, Linda, and daughter-in-law, Mary. Opal’s creative and artistic abilities developed as she took up oil painting, winning a number of awards. She explored her interest in porcelain dolls, learning to cast, fire, paint and finish them, and making their clothing to complete the display. When Charles’ health was failing, they moved to Greenwood, IN. Following Charles’ death in 1997, she read to first graders in Isom Central Greenwood Elementary School for sixteen years. She read and portrayed the stories of “The Little Pink Mouse.” Opal’s back deck was next to Greenwood High School’s sport field and many young players would recognize Opal as “the story lady” from their early days in school. In 2009 Opal moved to Independent Senior Living at Greenwood Village. She will be fondly remembered by all the staff as she always thanked them by saying, "you're a good kid". In 2013 she transitioned into Assisted Living, and in 2016, moved to the Pavilion Health Care Center where Opal passed peacefully on January 25, 2017, surrounded by her family. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 noon at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington Street. Interment will follow at Round Hill Cemetery.
