John P. Sukup

John Peter Sukup, 93, passed away on October 22, 2010. He was born on March 4, 1917 to John Sukup and Anna Spacec Sukup in Muskegon, Michigan. He was raised in Cudahy and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and graduated from Marquette University High School in 1935 and from Marquette University in 1940 with a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Sukup attended graduate school at Harvard before joining the Army Signal Corps at the start of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Joseph Sukup, his sister, Irene Reed, and his wife, Janet Greger Sukup. Mr. Sukup was very proud of his parents, who were immigrants from Austria-Hungary, because they stressed the importance of education and made many sacrifices for their children. His father, who he called, �The smartest man I ever knew,� held various jobs including factory worker, tavern owner, real estate agent, and insurance salesman, and his mother was a housewife who also ran some of the business. He spent much of his time during World War II at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He took his wedding vows with Janet Greger in Dayton on November 21, 1944, and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage together. After World War II he moved to the Chicago area where he taught at Wright Junior College and Loyola College. Mr. Sukup moved his family to Indianapolis in 1956 and was involved in the electronic manufacturers� representative business, being co-owner/owner of Thomas and Sukup, Sukup and Cox, and John Sukup, Inc., until retiring in 1996. Mr. Sukup loved traveling with his family throughout the country in one of their motor homes, of which they owned 8 through the years. He also loved traveling with his wife to many foreign countries. They sometimes took the adventurous route, such as climbing Mr. Kilimanjaro, canoeing on the McKenzie River, driving their motor home to Alaska, and viewing polar bears in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Most of all, he was a dedicated family man who cared deeply for his children and relatives and was very supportive throughout many different circumstances. Some of his many interests included amateur radio, camping, canoeing, working in his workshop, taking an active roll with the Boy Scouts, along with many other activities. He was also a member of several professional and social organizations and was a founding member of St. Matthew Catholic Church for over 50 years. He is survived by his sons, Jim (Mary), Tom (Veronika), and Bill Sukup, granddaughters Dawn Hillier and Ann Sukup, and grandsons John and Adam Sukup. Calling will be Wednesday, October 27 2010, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Road. A short viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. before a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 28 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 4100 E. 56th Street, 46220. Internment services will follow at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in Indianapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Boy Scout Troop 443.
