JoAnne Waterston

JoAnne Waterston, 89, of Westfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026. She was born February 15, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio to the late Donald and Doris (Hardwick) Gill. JoAnne was a graduate of Richmond High School, Richmond, Indiana, and attended Indiana University East. After raising her three daughters, she joined the Palladium Item as a journalist where she worked for several years, before spending 27 years with MetLife Farm Mortgage Division retiring in 1998. JoAnne volunteered as a grey lady at Reid Hospital, was a Girl Scout Leader for many years, and helped with many church events and mission trips. A talented artist, JoAnne, found joy in drawing and oil painting. She lovingly knitted blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and created cherished Christmas stockings for her family. JoAnne took great pride in her garden and landscape and enjoyed working on them. She also loved to travel with her dear friend and honorary sister, Nettie Cates, sharing countless cruises and adventures together. One of JoAnne’s greatest pleasures was sitting on her porch with a good book, watching the hummingbirds visit her feeders. JoAnne will always be remembered for her love for her family, great sense of humor, and never being afraid to speak her mind. JoAnne is survived by her sister, Sandy Allen; daughters, Rae (Waterston) Gillespie (John), Terri (Waterston) Webster (Scott) and Daryl (Waterston) Andress; eight grandchildren, Britney (Gillespie) McMillan (Will), Joe Gillespie (Rachel), Lindsey Webster, Casey Webster, Anna Webster, Kelly (Andress) Green, Brian Andress (Abby), and Maxie (Andress) Smith (Mike); 13 great-grandchildren, Georgia, Collins Jo, Stella, Sam, Brody, MJ, Jaxson, Hadleigh, Weston, Ella, Rhett, Ford and Nellie; and numerous nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery, 500 North Maple Street, Hagerstown, IN 47346. Rick Gill will preside over the service.
