Joanne Deloris Short

Joanne Deloris Short, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away July 13, 2024. She was born July 29, 1930 in Worthington, IN, to the late Roy L. and Nevada L. (Livingston) Fowler. Joanne was a graduate of Patricksburg High School and was a homemaker. She was a devoted member of Franklin Road Baptist Church and their Joy Singers. Joanne was an avid gardener with a green thumb, an animal lover, and Indianapolis Colts fan. She absolutely adored her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joanne was a woman like no other. She was a gardener, cook, therapist, animal whisperer, and so much more. Her house was somewhat of an orphanage for lost children and pets. She would take you or a pet in without hesitation and many of us stayed there at some point in our lives. Her house was not grand, but it was filled with love and even as our family grew in number, we somehow all still managed to fit. Many Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving gatherings were shared at her house over the years. Joanne taught us about plants, animals, and life, and she always knew the answer to our questions. She was somewhat of a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. Joanne was patient and the best listener. She told amazing stories about Nutty the Squirrel and his mischievous adventures. Her loss will leave a void in our hearts but will rejoice knowing she is in heaven surrounded by gardens of beautiful flowers and knowing we will someday see her again. Visitation will be Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street, with funeral services there Friday at 10:00 a.m. Joanne is survived by her son, Kevin Short; daughter, Sheri Nichols (fiancé, Bob Rose); daughter-in-law, Judy Short; grandchildren, Kerry Short (Sarah), Amanda Bleyle (Drew), Caitlin Wilson (Steven), Laura Lovell (Jay), Genna Short, Elyse Temple (Nic), and Kaleb Short; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Oran Short; son, Kerry “David” Short; four brothers, Charles, Jim, Bill and Bob; and six sisters, Patty, Helen, Vonita, Mary, Joyce and Lorena. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Indianapolis, 7929 North Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
