Hildegard Elizabeth (Werner) Bennett, 87, of Carmel passed peacefully at her home on Sunday, April 14, 2024. For the past year, she courageously battled stomach cancer while receiving hospice care at home. Hilda was born on June 26, 1936 in Reading, PA to the late Fritz Clemens and Erna Frieda (Fichtner) Werner. After high school, she moved with family to South Bend, IN and later met the love of her life. A “carhop” met a “soda jerk” while working together at Boonie Doon Drive-In. On February 22, 1958, Hilda married Thomas Kent Bennett, who survives. In addition to her loving husband of 66 years, she is survived by her daughters, Cindy Slopsema (Mike) of Noblesville, IN, and Karen Willman (Mark) of Carmel, IN; six grandchildren, Kent George (fiance, Megan Marie Puetz), Adam Lee Willman, Brooke Elizabeth Willman, Nathan Bennett Willman, Clinton Lee Slopsema, and Grace Elizabeth Slopsema; her brother Johannes (Margret) Werner; and her brother-in-law Lester Snyder. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, brother Friederich Werner, and sister Christiana Snyder. As Karen and I write about Mom, our hearts ache with the emptiness left by her absence. She had unwavering devotion in caring for Dad who has Alzheimer’s. She will forever be the best mother in the world, cherished and loved. Hilda’s grandchildren will keep her spirit alive, continuing her legacy of love. For those fortunate enough to know Hilda, her love, kindness, and strength leave an enduring mark. She had a few nicknames like, “Mom Kat,” “HB,” and “Queenie.” She loved being with family and friends. Hilda was an animal lover, avid gardener, league bowler, loyal Purdue fan, fisherwoman, and boat co-captain. Over the years, Tom and Hilda formed many great friendships living in Lafayette, IN, and boating on Lake Michigan in St. Joseph, MI. They moved to Carmel to be closer to us and their grandchildren. We were blessed! Our heartfelt thanks to Hilda’s hospice nurse, Danny. For the last year, he and his team compassionately cared for and supported her needs. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Hilda may be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Hamilton County Humane Society. Per Hilda’s wishes, final care and arrangements are private and entrusted to Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel.
