Helen I. McIntyre Hawes

Helen I. McIntyre Hawes, 91, of Indianapolis passed away January 20, 2011. She was born January 6, 1920 in Anderson, Indiana to the late Arlie and Gracie (Fields) McIntyre. Helen was a graduate of Hope High School, Hope, IN. She married Robert N. Hawes November 27, 1942 in Columbus, Indiana. During the Second World War, she followed her husband to his various military posts in places such as Oklahoma and California. Following his discharge, the couple lived in West Lafayette, IN where Bob attended Purdue University. They had two children, Robert L. Hawes and Nancy A. (Hawes) Schaedel and eventually settled in Indianapolis, IN. Helen raised their children after her husband�s unexpected death in 1956. She was a den mother, a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher and avid member of First Church of the Nazarene, which she joined in 1941. She had a deep faith that in great part defined who she was. She worked throughout her life, including employment as an admissions registrar for Community East Hospital for fourteen years retiring in 1985. Her family was her passion, but all people were welcome in her home. She loved entertaining, innovative cooking, flowers, music, birds, and playing the piano. Her pride in life was her influence and participation in raising the children of her family. Her greatest delight was her family and many friends. She was involved in the lives of all of the members of her family and was appreciated for her love of sharing family history. She is survived by many family members who will greatly miss her, especially: her son, Robert L. Hawes and wife Teresa (KY); her daughter, Nancy Schaedel and husband Gordon (VT); her sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Ferman Keesling (IN); her grandchildren, Matthew Hawes and Kristal Lovelace (KY); her nieces, their husbands and children-- Jean and John Fattic (IN); Marilyn and Charles Hartle and Alyssa (IN); Beth, Rick, and Merranda Mowrey (TN); and Lucretia Mowrey Brown and her husband Jerry (TN). She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Herschel and Doris McIntyre. Visitation for Mrs. Hawes will be Monday, January 24, 2011 from 4 PM to 8PM at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington Street with funeral services Tuesday at 12 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd Community Center, 4107 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46201.
