Gregory Scott Heneisen

Gregory Scott Heneisen, 60, beloved husband and father, son, brother, and friend passed abruptly into the full presence of his King and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at his home in Indianapolis. He was loved deeply by his wife, Amy (Welker) of 20 years and his teenage son, Thomas, and he is missed beyond measure. Greg was born on June 7, 1965 in Cedar Falls, Iowa to Thomas Clarence Heneisen, Jr. and Juanita Faye Heneisen, both of Evansville, Indiana. His family soon returned to their family roots in Evansville where Greg lived most of his growing up years, attending Washington Avenue Baptist Church and graduating from Harrison High School in 1983. As a boy Greg loved riding his bike around his neighborhood and playing with friends. In high school Greg thrived on the competitiveness of high school football and pole vaulting, and as an adult he added golfing to his athletic repertoire. Greg took his love of bicycling into his adult life when at the age of 28 he started riding the Hilly Hundred bicycle ride in Bloomington, Indiana. Completing the Hilly became an annual tradition, except in 2004 and 2005 when he was busy dating and marrying his wife, Amy. In 2015 Greg hauled his four-year-old son up and down the hills of Bloomington on a tag-along, as together they completed a single day of this iconic bicycling event. Greg's bicycling feats culminated in the 160-mile, single-day RAIN (Ride Across INdiana) in July 2016. Cardiac bypass surgery in 2016 brought a close to Greg's Hilly Hundred and RAIN days, but not, at that time, to his bicycling endeavors. In addition to bicycling, Greg enjoyed other pursuits, including woodworking (refinishing the family dining table and designing and building custom shelves and drawers for the home closets and pantry) and gardening, especially growing tomatoes, a skill he was taught by his Uncle Roy. Greg and Amy relished time hiking in the splendor of God's magnificent creation, and together with Thomas they shared yearly vacations to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park every spring or summer since 2014. Greg graduated from Indiana University, Kelley School of Business, in Bloomington with a degree in accounting and began his working career in Indianapolis as a CPA. His employment included working for Ernst & Young; Dunbar, Cook, and Shepherd CPA firm; the Indiana Hand Center; Methodist Sports Medicine; and for the last twenty-one years he was employed by Franciscan Health as Director of Financial Planning and Business Development where he was valued and respected by everyone he worked with. Greg's most important relationships were those with his family and with his Lord Jesus. After surrendering his life to the Lord in July of 1999, Greg's greatest motivation became learning how to know and become like Jesus, a work of transformation from the inside out. He devoured books and lectures as he devoted himself to developing a constant, clear vision of life in God's world before us and of the everlasting significance of our work, day by day. One of his prayers was that he would continue growing his understanding of life in the kingdom of God now - a life that is full, rich, and immersed in the daily reality of God's presence in and with us. Because of the transformative work of Christ in Greg's life, Greg wanted everyone he knew to experience this work as well, particularly his nieces and nephews and his son, Thomas. Early in his Christian life Greg became active in his local church, leading small group Bible studies and joining work trips to rural northeast Brazil to help build new church buildings. Greg often said that one of the marks of the transformation in his life after becoming a Christian was his desire to give generously of his time and money, whereas before he had held tightly to both. Greg's spiritual influence was felt at home where he led his family in bedtime Bible reading, encouraged his son to memorize Scripture, and discussed his latest spiritual book reading or video watching with Amy and Thomas. Greg beamed with immense pride and joy when he witnessed his son's baptism into the covenant family of God on August 24, 2025. His family will miss his wisdom and spiritual insights. Greg is survived by his wife of 20 years, Amy (Welker) Heneisen; son, Thomas Heneisen; mother, Juanita Faye (Vanhooser) Heneisen; sister, Sheila (Heneisen) Nalley and her husband, Jim; sister, Terri (Heneisen) Beckman and her husband, Dave; brotherin- law Jeremy Welker and his wife Julie (Bethel); brother-in-law Josh Welker and his wife Kathy (Miller); sister-in-law Ada (Welker) Pieper and her husband Jason; brotherin- law Jon Welker and partner Halee Gayle; nieces and nephews Patrick, Sarah, Katie, Laura, John, Riley, Mary, Wesley, Abby, Sam, and James; and great nieces and nephews Kyllian, Kaelin, Malakye, Brooks, Eli, Benjamin, Lillian, Kit, Jack, Charlotte, Luke, and Adara. The service honoring Greg's life will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at 12:30pm at New City Church, 345 N. Kitley Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana. Pastor Roger Williams is officiating. Friends may visit Tuesday morning from 10:00am - 12:00 noon at the church. For those coming from out of town, please note that Indianapolis is on Eastern (New York) time. Following the funeral service, a graveside service and burial will be held at Acton Cemetery, 7900 Acton Road, Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a fund established for Greg's son, Thomas. Arrangements for this fund are being made and details will be provided soon.
