Edith Marie Standley

Edith Marie Standley, 92, passed away May 16, 2019. Marie was born September 24, 1926. She was born and raised on a farm in Sanilac County which is in the ‘thumb’ area of Michigan. During the war, she and her brother, Arthur, took care of the farming while their older brothers were in Europe and the Middle East during WWII. After the war, Marie moved to Detroit and worked for Michigan Bell. She married Joseph T. Standley in St. John’s Catholic Church in Ubly, Michigan on August 30, 1947. In 1959, they moved to Indiana and were married 55 years until Joseph’s death in 2002. Marie was the manager of B. Dalton Booksellers for 17 years, before retiring in 1993. She enjoyed all sports but especially liked tennis. With her love of tennis, she volunteered for many years at the RCA Tournaments in downtown Indianapolis. Marie also loved to play euchre and had belonged to a euchre club since 1961. She also played euchre at the Greenwood Social and various churches within the Indianapolis area. Marie was an avid volunteer for her church, Our Lady of Greenwood. She worked the Food Pantry every week. She also helped with the breakfast for new members, worked the pork chop dinners at the festivals, and participated in all of the Our Lady of Guadalupe events. Marie was also an active member of the Keenagers and enjoyed going to events with this group. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 21, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 South Meridian St., with a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Marie thanks the good Lord for the gifts of her children whom she so enjoyed and loved. She is survived by her children, Michael Standley (Denise), Kathryn Black, Cecilia Morgan, Deborah Whitehurst, Roberta Oles, Suzanne Standley, Philip Standley (Laura), Madelyn Gentry (Phil G). Matthew Standley and Dr. Theresa Anderson (Michael); 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Sperry and son-in-law, John Oles preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Our Lady of Greenwood Food Pantry and/or Our Lady of Greenwood Keenagers, 335 South Meridian Street, Greenwood, IN, 46163. Final care and arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel.
