Dr. Rodney E. Phelps

90, of Indianapolis, ended his voyage peacefully on September 17, 2010 with his beloved wife Shirl and his family present. Rodney, �Doc� and �Papaw� as he was known to family and friends started his earth voyage June 29, 1920. He was a Purple Heart recipient, an eight year U.S. Navy veteran, and retired dentist, after practicing in the Irvington area for 50 years. His life long dream was to end his voyage on the property where he started his voyage, and he did so! Doc was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Violet Phelps; brother, David; son, Kevin; and first wife, Bette. He is survived by his wife, and dental assistant of 49 years, Shirley; daughters, Terry Lee Blankenship (Paul) and Kathy Jo Phelps; son, Steven Phelps (Diana); brothers, Raymond (Tina) and Ernie (Ruth); grandchildren, Jennifer Morris (Anthony), Michael Blankenship (Erin), Nathaniel Rager, Hannah Callais (Jamie); great-grandchildren, Alex, Sam, Isabel, Lucas, Trent, Sydney, Gavin and Baby Callais. And two furry cats, Smokie and Rosie. Doc was born and passed in his home in Irvington. He was a graduate of Tech High School (1938) and IU Dental School (1952). As senior class president he also taught at IU School of Dentistry and OKU. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Pearl Harbor survivor and was awarded the Purple Heart. His pride and joy was Country, family (Honey Bunch and Sargeant), and garden. He was known for the vegetables and zenias he grew and gave to everyone generously. He also was a 32� Mason, a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor Assoc., and the U.S.S. Curtis Assoc., as well as a Shriner, and Eagle Scout, and Scout Leader of Troop #462. Join us in celebrating his distinguished life by calling from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2010 at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington St. with PHSA farewell ceremony at 6:00 p.m. and Masonic ceremony at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 12 noon. The family would like to thank all of his patients, family, friends, doctors and staff at the VA Hospital and Season�s Hospice, especially Dr. Sha. �Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition� as Doc always said! In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, the Damien Center, the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund, and Palative Care Unite.
