Barbara Ann Squires

Barbara Ann Squires, 91, joined the Church Triumphant on November 12, 2018. She was born at Methodist Hospital on July 19, 1927 in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Walter Jacob and Flora Katherine (Young) Hacker. She had two older sisters, Rosemary and Geraldine (Jerry). Barbara was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School, where she was a part of the Tech Legion. Barbara was a secretary for Indiana State Typothetae. Barbara was a secretary for Indiana State Typothetae for 11 years after her graduation. She enjoyed ice skating and playing the piano and took several trips with her girlfriends. She married George E. Squires April 14, 1956, and he preceded her in death November 29, 2003. She met her husband through her brother-in-law Bob Bettge (Jerry’s husband) as he was a co-worker with George at the Indiana State Highway Department. Barbara and George were married at the home of her other sister (Rosemary and Bob Bonham). Throughout the years all three families were very close. As a child she was a member of Centenary Christian Church and after marriage she joined Central Avenue United Methodist, where she played the chimes for services. In 1969 she became a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and Dora Circle. Barbara is survived by her children, Kay (David) Smith and Mark Squires, who is disabled and lives at Especially Kidz in Shelbville. Kay and David gave her three grandchildren: Kathryn (Kari) of Glens Falls, New York; Jacob, of Tucson, Arizona; and Joseph (Joey), of North Las Vegas, Nevada. She even shared her birthday with the youngest, Kari. Last year she was delighted to welcome a great-grandchild, Emberly, daughter of Joey and his wife Nikki. She was excited recently to learn of a great-grandson who will arrive in April of 2019 to Joey and Nikki. Visitation will be Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 East Washington St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Especially Kidz (c/o Dawn Wendel), 2325 S. Miller St., Shelbyville, IN, 46176.
